How we approach true shoji

Shoji doors are built as a wooden frame and lattice backed by a synthetic skin that reads like traditional Japanese rice paper but does not tear, yellow or need replacing the way real paper does. The light through them is diffuse and warm rather than direct, which is the whole point. We build them in contemporary and traditional layouts, from a spare 3-lite up to a 24-lite grid, and run them on double, triple or quad track so three and four panels can stack without eating the wall beside the opening. Clear wood finishes show the grain; painted frames let the lattice pattern do the work on its own.
